Very rare Baccarat dated stardust carpet ground weight including six-pointed star, arrow, whorl, cog, shamrock and trefoil canes, in coral, orange, yellow, plum, cadmium green, cobalt blue, ruby and turquoise, in a sea of red and white stardust canes. The piece includes the Gridel silhouette canes of a deer, a dog, two horses, two moths, a goat, an elephant and a rooster. The design also contains a rare primrose portrait cane. B1848 signature/date cane. "Carpets formed of sparkling white stardust canes make brilliant settings in which the colored canes stand out like gems."–Paperweights: "Flowers which clothe the meadows". Very rare Baccarat dated blue and white star carpet ground weight with complex six-pointed star, arrow, cog, fortress, shamrock and trefoil canes, in coral, ruby, yellow, plum, cadmium green and cobalt blue. The piece includes the Gridel silhouette canes of a goat, a dog, a moth, a rooster and a deer set in a sea of cobalt blue and white six-pointed star canes. B1848 signature/date cane. The term carpet was first used in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Metiers (Paris, 1855) to describe these weights. Diameter 3 1/8". $12,000—15,000

20. Very rare Saint Louis pink carpet ground weight, a patterned arrangement, containing five complex florets, composed of lime, white, Persian blue, and pink crimped cog/irregular leaf/quatrefoil canes, around a central floret, with powder blue, ruby, white and lime cog and six-pointed star canes, in a sea of pale pink and white crimped cog canes. The maker obviously put some thought into this very fine arrangement. The irregular leaf canes on the outside of the piece have been accented with a translucent blue which brings depth and movement to the design. The irregular leaf canes have tiny pansy-type canes in their centers. Diameter 2 7/8". $6000—7000

21. Extremely rare Saint Louis paneled millefiori carpet ground weight containing four ruby and green twists emanating from a central complex emerald and white cog/star cane. The twists are partially outlined by four crescent-shaped garlands of Persian blue and white six-pointed star canes, whose tips each curve to embrace a large salmon, lime, powder blue and white complex cog/six-pointed star cane. A carpet of white cog canes decorates the outer edge of the design. The faceting in this thoughtfully conceived design has been created with a circular top facet and eight circular side facets that alternate between a large and small size. When viewed from the top, one sees an elegant cross shape. Hollister described a similar design, "A final example shows a white cog carpet accented with four large cog florets about a central square grouping, bordered by blue and yellow barber-pole twists. 22. Baccarat turquoise-over-white double overlay circular garland millefiori weight with six circlets of complex canes arranged around a central circlet of complex millefiori. The outer circlets alternate between
complex six-pointed star canes encircling a stardust/bull's-eye cane, and complex six-pointed star/cog canes surrounding an arrow/fortress cane. The overlay has been cut with a top facet and two rows of side facets. The overlay has a hair-thin line of black color in between the top facet and a side facet. Diameter 3 1/8". $4000—5000

Excellent Baccarat pink-over-white double overlay interlaced trefoil garland millefiori weight with a trefoil of emerald, cobalt blue, ruby and white arrow/six-pointed star canes interlocked with a garland of white and lime stardust/bull's-eye canes, around a central arrow/fortress cane encircled by a garland of salmon and white cog/star canes. Ruby, cobalt blue and white stardust/arrow/six-pointed star canes and emerald, white and ruby star-shaped/six-pointed star canes have been placed inside the loops of the garland. A pink-over-white double overlay has been cut with a top facet and two rows of side facets. Diameter 3 1/8". $7500—10,000
