weight with deep violet upper petals and black-spotted,
cream-colored lower petals, on a stem with a dimensional purple
bud and emerald green leaves. An almost imperceptible green glass
rod, commonly used to attribute this type of weight, can be seen
in the center of the flower. "No two are more than superficially
alike."-The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights."People
used the pansy as a subtle way to show support for Napoleon and
the empire after he was deposed."-The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging
Tradition.Diameter 3 1/16". $4000-4500

38. Very good Baccarat
pansy weight, the flower, with royal purple upper petals
and black-striped purple and yellow lower petals, around a stardust/bulls-eye
cane, on a stalk with pale green leaves, over a star-cut ground.
In nineteenth-century flower language, the pansy symbolized tender
thoughts. This design is often labeled as a type III or common
pansy. Diameter 2 1/2". $1200-1400

39. Very rare dated engraved
Baccarat Dupont pansy weight, the flower, with purple
upper petals and black-striped purple and ochre lower petals,
around a complex stardust/bulls-eye cane, on a stalk with
a bud and emerald green leaves, over a star-cut ground. The exterior
of the design is engraved with a fancy MS monogram and the words,
"Souvenir 1903." Some scratches in part of the engraving.
"His work shows that he was doing everything he could to
recapture the spirit if not the letter of the classic Baccarat
weights, and his near success is testimony to his skill. Yet
the trained eye spots the difference immediately-the color schemes
of the canes, magnifying properties of the glass, shapes of the
weights, all are different. The lower petals of the pansy, for
example, are amber instead of yellow. Baccarat sold these weights
through a small retail shop next to the Hôtel Montalembert
until 1933 or 1934 when Dupont died."-The Encyclopedia
of Glass Paperweights.Diameter 2 7/8". $1200-1400

40. Sandwich
Glass Company red, white and blue weedflower weight,
the flower, with two cobalt blue upper petals and three
red-and-white-striped lower petals, around a complex red and
white cross cane, on a stalk with two colors of green leaves.
From the Winters collection. "Highly coveted red, white
and blue single flowers and floral bouquets conjure the world
of the patriots who fought under Abraham Lincoln in the Civil
War. While the colors of a cloth flag fade, these pieces possess
the same color and vibrancy as they did the day artisans pulled
them from the annealer. Like the United States flag, artisans
created these brilliant stylized blooms to symbolize the ideals
used to found America. Preserved like a fly trapped in amber,
each bloom records the passions of a fascinating period in American
history."-The Art of the Paperweight-The Boston &
Sandwich and New England Glass Companies. From the Winters
collection. Diameter 3". $800-1200
