sulphide weight. The king of beasts reposes on a bed
of colored glass in front of a blue fern, inside an egg-shaped
dome, which has been elaborately cut with geometric facets. A
garland of curved orange threads encircles the scene. This type
of weight is believed to have been produced as a toy for wealthy
children. Two bubbles on the sulphide. From the Winters collection.
Height 4 1/4". $300-400

114. English green glass
doorstop with the sulphide of a rooster sleeping on a

with no artistic content would be used, abused, and discarded,
whereas the better made pieces would be cherished and cared for
as ornamental objects."Old English Paperweights.From

116. New England
Glass Company Queen Victoria and Prince Albert sulphide weight
with a side-view cameo of the royal pair who created
the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Minor chips
and bruise to the base. "Sulphide paperweights, though not

117. New England
Glass Company Louis Kossuth sulphide weight with a cameo
of the Hungarian freedom fighter set over clear ground. The base
of the cameo is inscribed, "Kossuth." The underside
of the sulphide is inscribed, "EX-GOVERNOR OF HUNGARIA,
SET AT LIBERTY BY THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
1851." "Finally, we meet Lajos Kossuth, a liberal Hungarian
statesman and opposition leader, who sought extensive political
and social reform, and independence from an oppressive Austrian
rule. He fled Hungary and toured Britain and the United States
in an unsuccessful effort to gain Western support for his partys
cause. His fight for liberty obviously struck a sympathetic chord
with the politically liberal New Englanders, who saw fit to commemorate
his visit in glass and create a few souvenirs for themselves."The
Art of the PaperweightThe Boston & Sandwich and New
England Glass Companies.Diameter 2 9/16". $250-350

118. Rare French
Queen Victoria painted weight containing a very fine
enamel portrait of the queen dressed in a low-cut gown and wearing
a crown. This piece is believed to date from the early 1840s,
when other pieces of this type are known to have been produced.
It is constructed in a manner similar to a Pinchbeck weight,
with a glass dome mounted on a porcelain plaque. "In the
basic form of a base affixed to a magnifying glass top, there
exist several paperweights in which the subject is painted on
an opaque white glass ground, the form relates them to Pinchbeck
while the painting style relates them to miniature painting."The
Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights.Diameter 3 1/8".
