250. Drew Ebelhare 1996
concentric millefiori weight containing a central signature
cane encircled by complex cog, star, rose and square-shaped canes,
in leaf green, lemon, pink, royal blue and white, set inside
a green and white stave basket. Signed and dated. "There
are three things Drew hopes a collector will look at in any of
his pieces. First and foremost, Id like them to enjoy
the combination of colors and the design. Then Id like
them to take out a magnifying glass and study the intricacies
of the canes. As they become more acquainted with a piece, Id
like them to find the tricks I used to create the colors.
Ebelhare talks proudly about the illusory colors in his work,
a trick he learned through his careful observation of antique
weights. By applying small areas of pink and blue in a cane,
for example, he often creates a cane that has an overall purple
tonality. Sometimes the color play is more subtle, but every
bit as delightful."Lawrence Selman, "Drew Ebelhare:
A New Heir to the Millefiori Throne" from the Annual
Bulletin of the Paperweight Collectors Association, Inc.(1997).

inspiration came from a copy of American Glass Paperweights
and Their Makers. He was not impressed by the work of most
of the glassworkers featured in Jean Melvins historic work,
but the millefiori of Charles Kaziun caught his eye. At a meeting
of the Texas Bluebonnet Chapter of the PCA later that year, he
met former chapter President Harvey Jones who was to become instrumental
in his growth as an artist. He wouldnt leave me alone,
says Ebelhare. He collected millefiori and wanted
me to make some, but I just couldnt do it. In the following
year, I tried countless times. At the same time, I was successfully
producing torchwork floral pieces, but I had a lust for that
Kaziun millefiori rose. "Lawrence Selman, "Drew
