256. D’Albret Jenny Lind sulphide weight with a front-view cameo of the famous soprano on a star-cut caramel ground. Eight and one faceting. Acid etched with the factory’s insignia. Limited edition of 410. "As with Baccarat and Saint Louis, Paul Jokelson also encouraged Cristalleries et Verreries de Vianne of France to begin producing paperweights. Baccarat 1953 coronation sulphide weight with a side-view cameo of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, as sculpted by Gilbert Poillerat, on a ruby ground in a crystal dome with six and one faceting. Signed and dated. Limited edition of 1492. "Gilbert Poillerat was an engraver, painter, sculptor and jewelry designer (for the clothes designer Jacques Heim), known above all for his metalwork. A graduate of the Ecole Boulle in Paris, he made iron and bronze into mirrors, furniture and chandeliers, often using the theme of the sun as his point of departure. His profoundly classical art revived the tradition of baroque metalwork in the style of grilles of Place Stanislas in Nancy… He was the first sculptor to be taken on in 1952-1953 when Baccarat decided to relaunch its paperweights. 258. Baccarat 1959 Pope Pius XII sulphide weight with a side-view cameo of the Catholic leader praying, as sculpted by Albert David, on a translucent garnet ground. Six and one faceting. Dated. 259. Baccarat 1954 Winston Churchill sulphide weight with a side-view cameo of the English prime minister on a ruby ground inside a crystal dome with six and one faceting. The sculptor Dora Maar, well known as Picasso’s mistress, designed this piece. The cameo mold was accidentally destroyed before the normal run was completed and only 558 of these weights were produced. Signed and dated. Diameter 2 3/4". $900-1200
