289. Early Saint Louis cherries on latticinio weight containing six ruby cherries, on stems with green leaves, nestled on a white double-swirl latticinio ground. "The first attempts were difficult and often disappointing, but the glassmakers became enthusiastic about this ‘strange quest. ’ One of them, Paul Gossman, demonstrated particular zeal. He never stopped trying. Due to his youth and his persistence, he was clever enough to make an old retired glassmaker speak. The man was Louis Lutz, known for his high degree of confidence, maybe even a relative of Nicholas Lutz. At the end of a day when he had almost been successful making a wonderful piece, he went to see the old man and told him about his difficulties. Little by little the miracle took place: the young glassworker’s problems kindled the old man’s memory and day after day he divulged secrets that he, himself, had all but forgotten. What a charming thought, that the rebirth of the exacting work should come from the friendship an old man had for a young one!"—The Art of the Paperweight—Saint Louis[revised edition].
