Lot 49
Lot 49
Saint Louis cherries paperweight.
With a gestural energetic style, the lampworked branch, leaves and fruit seem to spring away from each other. The red cherries look ready to jump from the stems. Yet, the patterned printies both reign in, and add complexity to the image.
"The various faceting treatments give the illusion of... more cherries on a bough. This is imaginative paperweight-making."-The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights.
Diameter 2 5/8" Estimate: $2250 - 3250

Lot 52
Lot 52
Baccarat strawberry paperweight
with three ripening berries, one new and emerald green, the other two growing larger and fleshier in pink, yet with a pale pearly cast that unripe strawberries display. The stylized green leaves fan out like French fleur-de-lis. A dramatic star-cut ground radiates through the clear glass.
"The artisans at Baccarat ingeniously fused hexagonal rods together to create the dimensional berries in this interpretation of the strawberry..."-The Art of the Paperweight-Challenging Tradition.
Diameter 2 13/16". Estimate: $2500 - 3500

Saint Louis vegetable paperweight
with a formal arrangement of five turnips: two purple, two white and one red, each with cropped leafy green tops, in a swirling white latticinio basket. In the Victorian book The Language of Flowers, turnips are said to represent "charity."
"The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution."-
Paul Cezanne (1839-1906).
