Lot 69
Whitefriars crystal inkwell and two paperweights with
concentric millefiori in bright pastry icing colors. Bold shaped
cog canes in hot pink, goldenrod, blue, and white, exhibit a
precision, rather than an overly precious design. The set, in
formation and coloration, resembles an assortment of rich cakes
or sweets, set out for a very proper, English high tea. The inkwell
has a matching stopper and a clear, footed base.
Inkwell height: 6 9/16" Paperweights diameter: 3 1/4"
and 3 6/16". Estimate: $2250 - 3000 |

Outstanding Bacchus magnum close concentric millefiori
paperweight with five rows of complex, ruffle, cog, and six-pointed
star canes around a large central combination cane containing
twenty-five canes. Displaying a mastery of contrasts, the paperweight
design teases the eye with diaphanous recesses, alternating with
bold, graphic canes that pop to the surface. The coloration is
also distinct; from feathery lavender/opal to a rich navy blue.
This example is significant for its size and extensive use of
complex canes.
"Compared to the output of the French glass works of Clichy,
Baccarat and Saint Louis, the Bacchus production was very limited,
possibly four hundred or so in total."-Old English Paperweights
(See Old English Paperweights, p. 51; The Encyclopedia of
Glass Paperweights, pp. 152-159).
Diameter 3 1/2" Estimate: $10,000 - 12,000 |

71
Whitefriars-type close packed millefiori paperweight with
assorted cog canes in red, blue, green, pink and white, encircled
by a garland of white staves. The floret faces of the canes extend,
aided by the crystal dome's magnifying effect, as if bursting
out of holiday crackers. The colors are kept in a minimal yet
vivid array, giving the paperweight the exuberance of bunting
and streamers.
Diameter 2 15/16". Estimate: $1100 - 1600 |

72
Gold-colored Pinchbeck paperweight with two men on
horseback, following a young couple through the woods; footed
base covered with felt. Thomas Pinchbeck (1670-1732) developed
a copper-zinc alloy, which was popular during the Victorian era
for its resemblance to gold.
"As Mrs. Bergstrom points out, the skills of jeweler, chaser,
and glassmaker are all required here, and it is unlikely that
a Pinchbeck paperweight was the work of one artisan or even one
factory. The fine workmanship and remarkable detail of the subjects,
together with the mysterious effect created by the magnifying
lens, makes these weights at least as interesting and successful
decorative objects as the sulphides..."-The Encyclopedia
of Glass Paperweights.
Diameter 3 1/4". Estimate: $900 - 1500 |
