Antique Bacchus close packed millefiori mushroom paperweight,
including star, flower and ruffle canes, encircled by a red and
white torsade. "The colors of Bacchus canes have been
described as 'pallid' and 'muted' pastels, but occasionally one
will be seen with deep blues and reds. The variety and complexity
of the canes and the arrangements more than make up for the lack
of color depth of the canes. Some very unusual colors have appeared
in several Bacchus paperweights, including pale fluorescent green,
lilacs and lavenders, pistachio green, and pale yellow. The blending
of the pastel colors has been arranged very sympathetically in
most cases, with the colors gently drifting into and not contrasting
with their neighbors." -Old English Paperweights. [Sotheby's
New York, Jan. 1995, Sale #6656, "Important Paperweights
Property of the New-York Historical Society," Lot 200.]
