Lot 58
Very rare antique Saint Louis close packed millefiori paperweight.
The distinctive cane designs nearly meet the top of the low-dome, which was the style before the magnification properties of crystal gained popularity. The millefiori include unusual symmetrical clusters ("bleu dentata"canes so-called for their toothy, grimacing appearance), cross canes, stardust, hollow canes and, possibly, attempts at silhouette canes. These close packed paperweights were made by rolling the surface of the pontil ball of glass in the bed of canes to pick them up, and because of this technique, some air bubbles appear between canes. The millefiori are on top of a blue and white jasper ground, that can only be seen from the bottom. Small chips and bruises around edge.
Diameter 3 1/8". $4500-6000
