Lot 119
Antique Baccarat crystal tumbler,
with enamel-on-gold foil inclusion of a messenger pigeon, carrying a letter. Presumably made at the height of the epistolary era, the letter was a love note or poem, and the tumbler inspired passionate correspondence. "The art of cameo incrustation, that is, encasing an object within glass, has been in existence to some extent since ancient times, although the earliest examples involved only a partial enclosure of the ornament. It was not until 1750 that the technique of completely encasing an object was attempted by a Bohemian manufacturer. …These tumblers were produced as gifts for special events: when a child was born he received a tumbler with a sulphide or enamel medallion of the Saint he or she was named after. The tumblers with medals were given to persons who had received these same decorations, and quite often their initials were engraved in the back of the glass. The tumblers were often placed in leather presentation boxes. Most of the cameo incrustations are closely related to historical events and famous persons, which give them a special appeal to collectors. They were also used as objects of political propaganda by Monarchy, Royalty and the French Republic." -Paul Jokelson, foreword from The Paul Jokelson Collection of Baccarat Antique Tumblers 1810-1860, Baccarat brochure.
