Lot 69
Antique Clichy blue and white swirl paperweight,
with a starburst cane center. "Colorful and dramatic, they have an energy and appeal quite different from those of delicate, millefiori gardens."--Old Glass Paperweights.
Diameter 3 1/8". $1800-2500

Lot 70
*Antique Clichy scattered millefiori paperweight,
on an opaque pink colorground, with thirty-seven large canes. This big, blousy design offers some of the loveliest of the Clichy colors, albeit the "settled skirt(s)" of the ruffled canes are more flattened skirts in this work. Also features the "slightly depressed ring" which one's fingers may trace around the base.
Diameter 3 1/4". $2500-3500

Lot 71
*Antique Clichy sodden snow interlaced garlands millefiori paperweight,
with interlocking quatrefoils, of pink and white, and turquoise and white canes, set into the cream-white opaque ground. This oversize piece has a soothing effect, as if it were made to literally "cool" one down by looking at the snow-bound dome. Milk-glass and opaline glass were exceptionally popular at this time, so the use in a Clichy design of this creamy coloration was certainly met by an approving clientele. "Whether woven to celebrate love, victory or merely beauty, the millefiori garlands found in patterned spacing schemes are among the most graceful and delicate ornaments found in paperweights." --Paperweights for Collectors. See The Art of the Paperweight, pp. 87-88; The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, pp. 131-132; Glass Paperweights of the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, plate 17, ill. 95, plate 18, ill. 54; Paperweights for Collectors, pp. 63-64.
Diameter 3 9/16". $3500-4500

Lot 72
*Antique Clichy millefiori star garlands, over a translucent cranberry ground paperweight.
With the red separated, the weight's white opaque slip is showing. Yet, appearing unfinished does not detract from the pretty lines of canes (the center star looks like bits of fresh rosemary), surrounding a large floret cane with bright yellow stave accents. The star's undulating pattern rather resembles the outline of a plump starfish.
Diameter 3 1/16". $2000-3000

Lot 74
*Antique Clichy signed close packed millefiori paperweight
within a white stave basket. Green, pink and white cane containing a "C" signature. Very likely an early weight judging from the coloring (which is paler overall, compared to the celebrated bright and rich tones usually achieved); and an unusual cane, comprised of pink whorls around a bundle of yellow rods. With the addition of four green staves, this cane seems to be a prototype for the rose, of which there are three among a crowd of other interesting canes.
Diameter 3 1/4". $5500-7000
