Antique, possibly Saint Mandé, spaced concentric
millefiori paperweight. The colors and ruffled canes are
suggestive of a Clichy, the design is well centered, and the
star-cut ground adds sparkle. See "St. Mandé, A Fifth
French Factory," Annual Bulletin of the PCA (1991); and
"Saint Mandé Confirmed," Annual Bulletin of
the PCA (1999).
Diameter 2 3/4". $600-1000 |

Lot 120
*Antique English "Nailsea" green bottle glass
ovoid doorstop, with controlled bubbles. The elongated bubble-type
designs were made by a steel-rod or tube being pushed into the
pliant glass, forming patterns entirely dependent on the skill
of the glassworker. This piece is well-made, in excellent surface
condition. Unfinished pontil.
Height 4 1/2"; Diameter 3 1/8". $225-400 |

Lot 121
*Antique English "Nailsea" green bottle glass
flower-pot paperweight, with two tiers of flowers. Although
pleasing in shape, with a well-made interior, the Nailsea Glass
Works, founded in 1788, nine miles from Bristol, is merely a
catch-all attribution for these type weights. Only a few are
stamped by known-makers, most were done anonymously (with varying
success as ornamental pieces) and usually with unfinished pontils.
"The green color varied only slightly and it is not possible
to identify individual glasshouses by this color variation."
--Old English Paperweights, p. 76.
Height 3 3/4"; Diameter 3 5/8". $225-350 |

Lot 122
*Late 19th-c. Chinese black Clipper ship paperweight.
In the waning years of the Classic-era paperweights, foreign
competitors to the established glass factories added paperweights
to their production line. Yet, the Chinese works are often sensitively
done (if not made of the cleanest, clearest crystal), and this
petite dome has its place in the great lineage of glass art.
Diameter 2 7/16". $180-300 |
